Knott County Central will be making its 13th appearance in the KHSAA Sweet 16 after defeating Hazard 65-56 in the 14th Region title game at Breathitt County’s Fairce O. Woods Coliseum.
Kent Damron led the way for the Patriots (18-7) with 18 points and six assists and was closely followed by Colby Napier with 16 points.
Scott Shepherd was outstanding on both end of the court for the Patriots scoring 12 points and hauling in 14 rebounds with 11 coming on the defensive end of the court.
Knott Co. Central only led by one (26-25) at intermission but used a 15-4 third quarter to take a 41-29 lead into the final stanza.
Hazard (22-5), the defending 14th Region champion, got a brilliant performance out of senior guard Wade Pelfrey with 24 points, four assists and three steals.
The Bulldogs, however, were not able to overcome shooting just 39.7 percent from the field despite forcing Knott Co. Central into a whopping 18 turnovers.
The Patriots were outstanding from the charity stripe going 18-for-23 for the game including 17-of-21 in the second half.
Knott County Central will now play the winner of the 5th Region tournament in the first game of the Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena at 11 a.m. on March 31.
