So far I have learned a lot in my time as owner of Bluegrass Basketball but I made the most important discovery last night — our youth has no idea about the accomplishments of our legends.
This thought has crossed my mind during several of our trivia games. I noticed a pattern: the old guys answer the questions about the old guys. No offense intended to my older subscribers, in fact, you give me hope that the groundwork laid by these athletes wasn’t done so in vain.
But what about when we are all dead and gone? With information so easily at the fingertips of our youth, I certainly thought they would use it as a tool to gain an understanding of all those forgotten names in the record books.
That’s where you and I come in. Today I’m making a commitment to our state to educate the Social Media generation. No longer will it be short blips and stats alone; I am gonna begin really telling the stories of the Founding Fathers (and Mothers) of Kentucky High School Basketball. I need your help, though. I need you to tell your kids. When you tell your tiny sports guru all about how the game of basketball is played, tell them about King Kelly. Tell them about Darrell Griffith, about Wes Unseld and Allan Houston. They need to know. We cannot let our rich history continue to wilt away. Light that fire in their eyes at a young age and they’ll share a passion for sports history with you and generations to come.
